The iconic Nongjrong Viewpoint will now remain closed to all visitors on Sundays to allow the local community a day of rest.

SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA — Travelers planning their weekend escapes to the "Abode of Clouds" must now account for a significant change in local tourism regulations. Starting January 2026, the Nongjrong Viewpoint and several major attractions in the East Khasi Hills have officially closed their gates to tourists on Sundays.

The decision was formalized by the local Dorbar Shnong (Village Councils) to address the growing environmental strain and to ensure that the local community can observe their traditional day of rest and religious services without the pressure of mass tourism.

Why the Sunday Ban?

Nongjrong, famous for its breathtaking "sea of clouds," has seen an unprecedented surge in footfall over the last year. While this has boosted the local economy, it has also led to significant traffic congestion on narrow mountain roads and waste management challenges. By closing on Sundays, the village councils aim to implement a more sustainable travel model in Meghalaya.

Affected Areas

While Nongjrong is the primary focus of this 2026 update, other spots like Mawlynnong Village have also tightened their Sunday regulations. Visitors are encouraged to check the latest places to visit in Mawlynnong before arriving, as entry for non-resident tourists is now strictly limited on the Sabbath.

How to Adjust Your Itinerary

For those currently booking Meghalaya tour packages, BREEZIAH experts suggest shifting your Nongjrong visit to a Monday or Friday morning. This not only ensures entry but also offers a much more peaceful experience with fewer crowds.

If your trip falls over a weekend, consider spending your Sunday exploring the local cafes in Shillong or visiting spots that remain open, such as certain trekking trails in Shillong.

"At BREEZIAH, we fully support the local community's decision," said a company spokesperson. "Respecting the local culture is the first step toward being a responsible traveler. We are already updating our 5-day magical Meghalaya tours to ensure our guests never face a closed gate."
