insightStaying in Meghalaya? Your Hotel or Homestay Must Register You on the State App
Since June 2025, every hotel, homestay and rented room in Meghalaya must log its guests on the state tourism app. What is recorded, why, and what to carry.

If you stay anywhere in Meghalaya, your host must register you on the state's tourism app. The rule covers hotels, resorts, homestays and private rooms let to paying guests, and has applied since June 2025, Outlook Traveller reported at the time.
What the rule says
- Every accommodation must record its guests on the Meghalaya Tourism app (the Meghalaya Tourism Provider app for hosts). The system is linked to the police for verification.
- It records check-in and check-out, the number of guests, where they are from and their ID details.
- The duty is on the host. Failing to register guests is treated as a violation.
- When the rule was announced, the order also barred renting private vehicles to tourists for self-drive.
The state introduced it after the 2025 murder of a tourist from Indore near Sohra, to make every visitor's stay traceable.
What it means for travellers
- Carry an original government photo ID, and a passport and visa if you are a foreign national. Your host will need it at check-in.
- Book with registered stays. A host who skips registration is breaking the rule, not you, but it can cause trouble later.
- Hire a car with a driver, or use a registered taxi, rather than planning to self-drive.
- Indian visitors still need no Inner Line Permit for Meghalaya.
